The Health & Safety Executive and industry and insurance guidance and regulations stipulate that kitchen extract systems should be kept clean to minimise fire and other risks. And the BESA specification TR19® Grease provides specific guidance on methods of measuring and defining cleanliness as a bench mark for good practice. As well as cleaning, PDC conducts kitchen grease extract risk assessments in line with TR19® Grease.
It is your responsibility to ensure that kitchen grease extract systems (canopies, filters, ductwork, risers and fans) in all commercial kitchens and the like are inspected as required by your buildings insurance policy, in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order and the Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations.
TR/19 Grease compliance and legislation such as Fire Risk Assessment, insurance needs and EHO compliance mean you can’t ignore it. The consequences of neglecting your kitchen duct cleaning can be severe for the individual responsible. But neglect can also have both mechanical and environmental implications for your business’s commercial viability.
It’s estimated that up to 80% of kitchen extraction duct systems are never cleaned. Although building owners and operators were given new duties of care in fire safety legislation in 2006, Regulatory Reform, Fire Safety, Order (RRO), there are on average 10 fires a day in London. Prevent this from happening to you, with our regular kitchen extraction cleaning service.
The cleaning frequency depends on kitchen usage:
Light Use: Cleaning every 12 months.
Moderate Use: Cleaning every 6 months.
Heavy Use: Cleaning every 3 months.
Neglecting to clean kitchen extraction systems can lead to severe risks such as fire hazards, health issues, and legal and financial consequences. The grease build-up can easily ignite and cause severe fires, putting property and lives in danger. Inadequate cleaning can also result in poor air quality, leading to respiratory problems and other health issues for those nearby.
Failure to comply with regulations can lead to hefty fines and increased insurance premiums, highlighting the crucial need for regular and thorough kitchen extraction cleaning.
